Film is Not Dead

The Lost Rolls

Last year I attended a talk with Ron Haviv at CreativeLive about his new book, The Lost Rolls.  The entire book is comprised of images that were recently developed from a lifetime of shooting images.  Many of these rolls were left undeveloped for years, some images were from personal projects, others from stories from around the world.  Ron's speech was moving.  He described having a preconceived notion that once you witness an event as powerful as conflict and capture an image, that the event will stay with you.  He was astounded that in reviewing the images from the developed film, that he could not place all of the events, time, or even the country.

At the end of the talk, he encouraged everyone to go home and to find their own lost rolls, rolls of film that remained undeveloped.

In 2011 I bought an old Rolleiflex and spent some time shooting images of friends and family.  I developed some of the film, but when I moved last year I found a handful of rolls that I never got around to processing.  I recently had the film developed.  I held up the negatives eagerly as if opening a gift, searching for old captured moments and trying to recall the memories that surrounded them .  Here are my lost rolls.
